Bristlecone Pine, Hickory Pine, Colorado Bristlecone Pine) Pinus aristata or Pinus balfouriana This pretty dwarf pine is a tough customer, growing slowly, but long lived, the oldest known specimen of which dates over 2400 years old. The tree itself is a slow-growing small shrubby tree with irregular growth habit. The bark is reddish-grey with scaling and the needles are very stiff. Best used as a specimen plant, it is very tolerant of poor rocky soils and prefers a slightly dry environment.
