Lindera benzoin
Spicebush
Native US deciduous shrub with tiny fragrant yellow blooms in the spring followed by clusters of bright red 1/2 inch fruits.  Does best in moist well drained loamy soils under the shadows of other trees.  Early colonists of the US used the dried berries as a substitute for allspice.  The bark, leaves and berries are said to have tonic and stimulant properties and have been used to treat typhoid fever, bruises, rheumatism and stomach complaints.  Hardy to -20F (-28.8C);  height: 10ft.
